In 1963, Giuliano Assorgia leaves the Italian island of Sardinia to pursue his dream in the Netherlands: opening his own Italian restaurant. His wife Maria follows him to Drenthe, where they work hard and save diligently to make their dream come true.
In 1978, the Assorgia family, along with their sons Giancarlo and Sandro, settles in Den Helder. In a small building on Koningstraat, they open their first little restaurant, Costa Smeralda, with just four tables. It quickly becomes a success — Den Helder embraces the family and their authentic Italian recipes — and eventually, they move to a new location on the same street, where they live and work for nearly forty years.
A family from Sardinia that has become inseparable from the restaurant’s story.
The authentic Italian restaurant has become a true fixture in the city center of Den Helder. Every day, the delicious dishes of founders Giuliano and Maria are prepared with great care. Maria’s brother and sister, Antonella and Peppino Saiu, have also been part of the restaurant for many years and are indispensable to the family business. Together with Giancarlo, they preserve the warm Italian atmosphere that defines the restaurant. In the open kitchen, pizzas are freshly baked every day in traditional pizza ovens by skilled Italian chefs. The Italian family is supported in both the kitchen and the restaurant by a large team of enthusiastic staff.
As a young boy, Giancarlo was already active in the restaurant — starting with cleaning, later becoming a bartender, then working in the service — until he eventually took over from his father in 2003.
Their son Sandro chooses a career in music and becomes known as the guitarist and songwriter for the band Van Dik Hout, which was formed in 1985 at the Nieuwediep school in Den Helder. In May 1994, the band achieved national fame with their hit single “Stil in mij”.
